Bitmine Immersion Technologies resumes share buybacks amid crypto dip

Bitmine Immersion Technologies is shifting its focus to buying back its own stock rather than increasing its purchases of Ether during a recent downturn in the cryptocurrency market.

This decision comes after the firm acquired 2.04 million shares last week as part of its substantial program for buying back crypto treasury assets.

The major Ethereum treasury entity has elected to repurchase its equity rather than accelerating its digital asset acquisitions amid the recent crypto market decline. BMNR reported that last week it purchased 2.04 million shares, averaging a price of $22.48, which amounted to approximately $45.9 million. This action follows a nearly ten-week hiatus and is integrated into a broader 2026 initiative. This larger program has already seen the repurchase of 22.9 million shares, totaling $399.6 million, with an average acquisition cost of $17.48, marking the largest equity buyback among any crypto treasury company.

The firm's total holdings encompass 6,051,933 ETH, representing 4.95% of the entire 122.2 million ETH supply, alongside 215 Bitcoin (BTC). Furthermore, the company maintains $514 million in cash and marketable securities, plus stakes valued at $76 million in Eightco and $180 million in Beast Industries, bringing its combined crypto, cash, and venture holdings to $15 billion. Of this, over 5.2 million ETH is staked, valued at $12.3 billion.

Chairman Thomas "Tom" Lee stated that the organization perceives the present market conditions as being favorable for conducting buybacks to boost investor value. He further explained, "When management believes Bitmine shares are relatively undervalued, the Company intends to accretively repurchase shares, subject to market conditions and under the existing repurchase authorization." He added that optimizing shareholder value remains the paramount goal. Regarding the market environment, he noted that crypto pullbacks have been less severe when compared to earlier periods, interpreting this as proof that a bull market is underway. He elaborated, "Crypto got pulled down by the same 'risk off' forces behind the AI sell-off. In contrast to late-2025 and early 2026, crypto pullbacks have been comparatively shallow. ETH has fallen 13% from its recent peak while US semiconductors ($SOXX) is down 20% in that same timeframe. We believe this is further evidence that a crypto bull market is underway." Despite this outlook, Bitmine maintains its routine weekly accumulation of ETH but considers the current setting to favor share repurchases. At the time of this writing, ETH was priced at $2,308, showing a decrease of 3.8% over the preceding seven days.

The decision by a major crypto treasury entity to prioritize share repurchases over increased digital asset accumulation reflects a strategic assessment of current market valuation, suggesting management believes the company's equity is undervalued relative to the prevailing conditions. This action aligns with the broader trend of institutional participants making capital allocation decisions based on perceived relative value between asset classes and corporate equity.

Why it matters

This decision by a major crypto treasury company signals management's view that current share prices are undervalued, prioritizing shareholder returns over accelerating digital asset purchases. Investors should watch how this strategy evolves as market conditions shift, especially given the firm's large holdings in ETH and BTC.
