Hayes details Flop Network's AI compute derivatives vision, futures, swaps
Arthur Hayes detailed a derivatives market structure for Flop Network, suggesting its native token could enable AI compute to become a tradable commodity.
Hayes published an essay on October 27, outlining futures and perpetual swaps linked to Flop Network's envisioned compute market. In this market, AI agents would compensate for computing power using FLOP. The objective is to establish a reference price for compute that financial contracts based on AI system resource consumption can utilize.
In a post on X, Hayes referred to his essay as "The Trifecta," presenting it as a framework for entrepreneurs building derivatives for the AI agent economy. His core concept posits that a liquid spot market for computing power is necessary to provide the benchmark pricing for perpetual swaps and futures.
The proposed Flop Reference Compute Rate (FRCR) would be calculated every hour based on a volume-weighted FLOP price per GigaFLOP of computing capacity. Quarterly futures contracts would settle on the final Friday of March, June, September, and December, utilizing US dollars for profit and margin.
Since the compute market would be priced in FLOP, the dollar-based structure necessitates a quanto derivative. This contract requires an adjustment to account for the relationship between the FRCR and the FLOP-to-dollar exchange rate, as traders might prefer dollar-denominated returns.
The perpetual swap would employ an eight-hour time-weighted average of the difference between its trading price and the FRCR to determine funding payments. Market makers could replicate futures exposure by either supplying or purchasing Flop Compute Units (FCUs), which denote reserved inference capacity for a specific AI model and delivery time.
This design mandates that suppliers post FLOP bonds, which they risk forfeiting should they fail to deliver the agreed-upon computing work. The entire derivatives proposal relies on Flop Network first establishing a functional spot market.
Hayes contends that current indexes tracking chip rental costs and individual AI token valuations offer incomplete data because both are derivatives of the fundamental cost of computation. Under the proposed system, network blocks would log inference tasks, completed computing work, and fees paid to miners, thereby aiding in calculating the exchange rate between FLOP and computing capacity.
Hayes introduced Flop Labs in August 2026, labeling its native token, FLOP, as "food for your AI agent." Furthermore, in an August 27 explanation, the project asserted that autonomous agents require money directly exchangeable for computing resources, rather than relying on payment systems primarily structured for human and business entities.
Why it matters
This proposal outlines a mechanism to tokenize and trade the underlying resource of AI, computing power. Regulators and exchanges will be watching how such complex, asset-backed derivatives are structured in the crypto space.
