The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has formally assigned responsibility for the theft of over $6 billion from Binance to North Korea's TraderTraitor operation. This attribution was delivered in a security alert issued on October 31st, wherein the agency linked the October 29th assault to cyber actors originating from North Korea, thereby offering official confirmation from the US government regarding the parties responsible for what stands as one of the most substantial cryptocurrency thefts in history. The FBI has also urged THORChain to implement blocking measures for the misappropriated funds.
This development underscores the increasing scrutiny applied by governmental bodies toward illicit activities within the decentralized finance sphere.
Why it matters
This confirmation highlights the ongoing threat of state-sponsored cybercrime targeting major crypto exchanges. Regulators are actively working to trace and prevent the movement of illicit funds across decentralized finance platforms.
